A Farm in the City

I went to Maymont again! By now you know I love this place. I wanted to share the more rustic side of this Gilded Age American Estate. You've seen the more formal landscaped gardens before, if not, check them out: here, here, here, herehere, here, and here. It's hard to believe this is located just minutes from Downtown Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University! To see more, click the link.

This barn houses a private party room, as well as houses lots and lots of critters in the petting zoo, including goats, bunnies, chickens, cows, pigs, and horses. There is also an aviary on the estate which shelters rescued birds, including owls, eagles, hawks, and more. I'll share more about that in a future post.

This goat is just too cute.

There is a HUGE butterfly bush with tons of butterflies. Here are a few photos from it.

There is quite a bit of woodland on the property, with an elaborate drainage and irrigation system including a lion fountain and waterfall.

The farm area gradually becomes more landscaped.

After meandering though paths across meadows, you pass though some hedges and finally you come upon this arbor covered in grapevines that overlooks a gorgeous Italinate garden.

For more photos of this garden, click here.

(Directly above is an older photo on a day where there hadn't been enough rain to provide water for both the fountain and the waterfall.)

This lion fountain is part of the irrigation system, as is the waterfall that empties into this pond full of koi:

I hope you've enjoyed your visit to Maymont! I'll be back with more goodies soon!
