Richmond Celtic Fest 2012

I went to the Celtic Fest again this year! It was at a different location, but just as fun! There, of course, were a plethora of kilts and lots of Celtic Rock and bagpipe music, harp contests, dancing, and the usual. I'm sharing photos from demonstrations of how folks lived in the late 1700s to the mid 1800s--food, iron work, etc!

Smoked meets, cheeses, and even some haggis (if you don't know what that is, don't ask...do try it, though. Tasty.) were staples of their diet.

As were turnips, apples, kale, and the newest addition to their diet all the way from the New World, the potato.

Their lunch looks delicious!

Right next door a gentleman was forging iron--the old fashioned way--IN A KILT! Well, I was wearing my kilt, too . . .

Here he pumps the bellows to make the fire hotter--so it will soften the iron.

Here is his anvil and hammer on stand-by.

Some of the items he makes.

They were also demonstrating period instruments. I love the carving (below) on this pochette--the tiniest member of the string family. The iPod of the day, as they called it!

Look how small it is compared to a violin!

Finally, here is an assortment of early flutes, a horn pipe, and period styled bag pipes.

I'm off to get ready for the Petersburg Pickers Estate Tag sale that starts today at 3pm and runs all week-end at 230B East Bank Street, Petersburg, VA 23803! For more information, click the link at the top of the page!
